The Consolata Mission Arrives

Four Consolata missionaries arrived in Tanganyika in 1919 to begin missionary work in Tosamaganga and Madibira. This marked the beginning of an important period in the development of the mission at Tosamaganga.

1922

Tosamaganga Becomes a Mission Headquarters

In 1922, the Iringa area was formally entrusted to the Consolata missionaries, and Tosamaganga became the headquarters of their mission. The mission subsequently developed educational activities that became an important part of Tosamaganga's history.

1926

The Beginning of the Tosamaganga Century

1926 is the establishment year officially used by the Tosamaganga 100-year Jubilee organisers. This marks the beginning of the century being commemorated in 2026.

1929

An Early Examination Milestone

In 1929, Tosamaganga became the first mission school to present candidates for the Central Schools Leaving Certificate Examination. Six candidates were presented for the examination, and historical records describe their performance as very satisfactory. This became an early milestone in Tosamaganga's educational history.

1961

Tosamaganga and the National Anthem

Tosamaganga is associated with the historical adaptation or editing of the Swahili version of Tanzania's national anthem, with Tosamaganga historical accounts attributing this work to Fr. Musso, an Italian Consolata priest associated with the mission.

1962

Teacher Education

Government records from 1962 identify the Immaculate Heart of Mary Teacher Training College at Tosamaganga. This demonstrates the wider educational role that Tosamaganga played in teacher preparation and educational development.

1964

Tanzania

Following the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964, the wording of the national anthem was adapted from "Tanganyika" to "Tanzania."

1960s

Tosamaganga and the Nyerere Family

Tosamaganga is historically connected with the family of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. Historical accounts and photographs preserve the presence of the Nyerere family at Tosamaganga during the period surrounding Tanzania's independence.

1968

A New Institutional Era

A Tanzania Government Gazette published in 1968 records Tosamaganga Secondary School as Registration No. S.1 and identifies the Consolata Fathers as its foundation body. This government record is an important documentary milestone in the institutional history of Tosamaganga.

2026

One Hundred Years

Tosamaganga reaches its centenary year. 1926 - 2026. The 2026 Jubilee celebrates a century of educational history and institutional development.
